Management

  • The management of the Association is vested in an Executive of seven elected officers. The Executive can also have ex-officio members, can co-opt non-voting members for specific purposes and includes the Chief Executive Officer and the Immediate Past Chairman
  • The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is appointed annually and is a full member of the Executive. The CEO is the primary contact for all members, potential members, Boots The Chemists management and, externally, to the wider professional world. The CEO can provide professional, legal and employment guidance to members and uses professional legal advice and services on matters outside his/her knowledge. The CEO administers the day-to-day activities of Boots Pharmacists’ Association and coordinates the working of the Executive and the standing committees.

Executive

  • has prime responsibility for the representative and consultative roles
  • agreed the Communication and Information Agreement with Boots The Chemists to enhance the consultation process
  • continues to present the Association's views on the requirements of the Working Time Regulations
  • participates in the exploration of the pharmacist establishment
  • promotes involvement in the election procedures for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Council and National Boards
  • continues to meet and discuss with other influential pharmacy bodies. A significant contact is maintained with the Parliamentary All-Party Pharmacy Group. 

Professional Committee

  • interacts with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society on matters such as the remit and function of the Society and its modernisation programme, the regulation and registration of pharmacy support staff, the self-regulation of the pharmacy profession, revisions of the Code of Ethics, mandatory continuing professional development, the proposals relating to standard operating procedures for dispensing, Registration and Fitness to Practice, Patient and Public Involvement strategy, regulations for National Boards and the “Foster Review”.
  • contributed to Government debate on the future roles for community pharmacy in primary healthcare including the Pharmacy Workforce in the NHS consultation.
  • responded to the Government's consultations on A Vision for Pharmacy in the New NHS, Fair for all, personal to you: choice, responsiveness and equity in the NHS and social care, proposals to reform and modernise the NHS (Pharmaceutical Services) Regulations 1992, the Best Use of the Pharmacy Workforce and the Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians Order 2006 (aka the Section 60 order).
  • responds to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on matters such as POM to P and P to GSL proposals, patient information leaflets, the advertising of medicines to the public, child resistant packaging and aspirin and Reye's Syndrome.
  • contributed to the Home Office debates relating to the supply of various items of drugs paraphernalia to drug users and the computerisation of prescriptions and records for controlled drugs.
  • responded vigorously to the Office of Fair Trading market investigation of entry regulations and pharmacy services in the UK.
  • responded to and participated in Stage Three of the Shipman Inquiry - the use and monitoring of controlled drugs in the community.
  • replied to the NHS Information Authority in connection with the draft code of confidentiality practice for NHS staff
  • responded to the Crown Enquiry and the subsequent proposals to implement supplementary prescribing for nurses and pharmacists.
  • interacts with Boots The Chemists on matters such as continuing professional development and primary care training.
  • responded to the All-Party Pharmacy Group’s inquiry into The Future of Pharmacy

Recruitment Committee

  • main function is to increase membership numbers
  • maintains contact with pharmacy pre-registration graduates throughout their pre-registration experience with Boots The Chemists
  • annually surveys pre-registration graduates' perception of the effectiveness of the pre-registration experience
  • periodically reviews the Association's benefit package for members
  • reviews and refines the methods of communication to members

Remuneration Committee

  • annually surveys members' remuneration expectations
  • discusses these expectations with Boots The Chemists as part of the BTC/BPA consultative process
  • annually surveys members' level of satisfaction following a salary review
  • discusses benefits and concerns arising from the salary review survey as part of the consultative process
  • occasionally surveys others areas of concern e.g. time owing and performance management
  • has a place on the Advisory Committee of Boots Pensions
